Hello from Paul & Eileen

Greetings from Nurse Eileensita, and Saint Paul…..

Pardon us for being facetious by using the above titles, but, hey, you’ve got to keep a sense of humor in time(s) of crisis.

Mima has now entered into “hospice” mode and we are mostly quietly sitting with him as the bell tolls, albeit not deafeningly so far. He is aware of the situation and tries to communicate with us, not always lucidly, but we know that his heart still beats in sync with ours.

When Mima started this section of the blog in December of 2006 his motivation was to keep friends and family informed of his diagnosis of lung cancer and its treatment. As we all know his battle has been epic, having suffered through major (and sometimes innovative) surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and steroid treatments. He never gave up hope or, astonishingly, his sense of humor as over the subsequent two-plus years he continued to travel, enjoy theater, read, knit and just generally be the wonderful contankerous soul he always was. If you scroll back to the beginning of this blog and read forward you will see the incredible journey he has taken in dealing with this dreadful disease.

Last week at the hospital, Mima decided to be on many cruises and visit many cities throughout the world. The power of his imagination and memories had him providing the Doctors with the following answers:
Dr.: Mima, do you know where you are?
Mima: Korea
Dr.: Mima, do you know where you are?
Mima: Ho Chi Minh City
Dr.: Mima, do you know where you are?
Mima: France today!
The fools kept asking, and Mima kept traveling……

At his job, from what Mima would say, (and from what I observed), he was a great boss and loved the family that he worked with. We do know he was a fine friend to a great variety of people of all (to coin a cliché’ maybe) ethnicities, cultures (both high and low) and he could compare the merits of fine food and the occasional cosmopolitan and Vive Cliqout champagne with the best of them. After 18 years of being partners, we were legally married in January of 2007, and he proved to be a devoted husband. Now, after almost 21 years, who would have thought we would end up and old married couple? Thank you Massachusetts!

Throughout this illness Mima has shown us how to love life intensely and transform. Even the most difficult moments turned into joyful events full of elegance, dignity, and some very serious fun.

So, what better time than right now, to pick your favorite spot in the world and travel with Mima. He wants to toast you…for making these past two years so tolerable. To his family, his friends, his co-workers and medical staff…. raise a glass of good wine, and enjoy the sights and company…...

We’ll keep you posted.

Mima and Family -

You are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Your love for life is an inspiration to all of us... So, as I sit here at my desk, I am envisioning walking thru the streets of Tallin....A city you told us about before our Baltic cruise...

Peace Mima....

In this time of heavy hearts I tend to think of the wonderful life Mima has had. He had a wonderful partner in Paul and over the years they build some amazing memories together. Most of us would have a full life with half the memories they created.

I think of his family who over the past 2 years have been their to lend a hand during some very tough times and more importantly, they have been there for the past 50 years to support his choices - whether they accepted them or not.

I think of all his wonderful friends, co-workers and strangers who have had the pleasure of meeting such a wonderful person. Each of us has a "Mima" story that will always be in our minds for the rest of our lives.

Mima - Keep up the fight and I am very grateful for the limited time I shared with you over the past 8 years.

Love,

Rich and Lauren

To Mima,

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

May the Lord bless you and keep you,
May the Lord look upon you kindly,
May the Lord be gracious to you and give you peace.

All Our Love,
Susie, Ashley & Adam

Mima and Paul,

It was a pleasure to share a toast of some fine Portugal Port with Javier, Renee and the both of you last night.

It was very neat to see that Mima became lucid to recongize who Javier was and his reaction of "Holy Moley" and that "Javier is my best friend from school" was VERY cool to see.

Javier - you're an amazing friend to fly up to see your childhood friend. It was a pleasure meeting you.

Mima rest well my friend and keep on cruising.

Love,

Rich and Lauren

I want to thank you Paul for opening up your home to us, so we could come & have those precious & selfish moments with our beloved Mima.
I also want to say Thank-you to Eileen for being his chauffer back & forth to Owl so we could enjoy his ever so creeative ways of governing our small herd.
& to thank-you anyone else who has been there for Mima as a crutch, guardian & nursemaid. Your efforts can never be repaid! the cost is to high to put price on.
I'd also like to say that in these last few visits, it has been enlightening to share our thoughts, experiences & hopes amoungst for the most part, strangers. I find comfort in hearing others words.

To those who can not make the trip to see this wonderful man I will say this. He is looking very well & is alert to his surroundings. Although not making complete sense in conversational words all the time but the face, OH those facials expressions.... They say it all!

Peace, strength, comfort & now the added courage to forge ahead as his light grows dim.

Paul,

I just learned of the terrible news from John's blog. Hopefully, Mima is in a better place. I regret never having met you both, but I feel as if I got to know you from Mima's blog.

If anything, Mima gave me the courage to start my first Kaffe Fassett sweater.

My love and prayers are with you all.
